Do Vibration Collars Work for Dog Training?
There are many different types of vibrating collars in the market today.
But they all use the same principle and work in the same manner. These vibrating collars work in that the collars are typically attached using rubber or fabric collars which in turn connect with a set of snaps, a buckle or Velcro. The module that vibrates is attached to the collar usually by a pair of metal prongs or a pair of rubber which in turn makes contact with the dog’s neck.
Many other vibrating collars can trigger a static shock or an audible tone whereby they work when triggered. Others also feature only a vibration mode while others get triggered by the trainer by use of a hand-held remote, but though most of these vibration collar models work automatically whenever they sense the vocal vibrations of your dog. This collars more so are anti-barking variety and they sense when the dog tries to vocalize.
Vibration collars mostly have been designed to curb the negative behavior of excessive barking of dogs. Dogs can get irritating when they bark excessively and they barking usually annoying, hence there is a need to curb this undesired behavior by use of collars.
As the name suggests, vibration collars primarily vibrate whenever your dog starts to bark. This sensation of vibrating then makes the dog stop the negative behavior. Although the effectiveness of these collars has been questioned in those dogs that have a lot of hair; therefore for the vibrating collars to work well, the dog should have short hair.
Professional trainers have argued that the vibration collars are very effective in getting the attention of your dog rather than using this collar for correction purposes. But other trainers have argued that it can be used for correction purposes. It is true that these collars can be used for correction purposes and they work. Dogs associate the vibrations with negative behavior and learn that the vibrations are caused by negative behavior. With this knowledge, they will try not to repeat the same behavior again with time.
Some of the best vibration collars available on the market feature a manually trigger with three or more different types of vibrations with a single, two and three vibrations in the three sets of buttons. These collars also feature adjustable straps that are suitable for dogs that weigh between 15-100 pounds. The collars intensity can be adjusted to warn and deter nuisance dogs.
The downside of vibration collars is that they never work well as shock or spray collars. If the dogs don’t get the meaning of the vibrations and you don’t teach them very well, they might also ignore the vibrations. Also for the stubborn and aggressive dogs, the vibration collars might not be the best option to choose from but rather a shock collar can work better. Yes, the vibration collars do work, but not in every dog and not every time you will use it. Sometimes the dogs might get used to the vibrations and ignore them altogether.
