In the dog community, any topic about the shock collar is quite sensitive.
This is due to the different views and beliefs from different people. To some, this is all that they need to train the dog while to others; it is pure cruelty and torture.
Basically, this is a device that is worn in the neck of a dog with two metal electrodes. The metal electrodes press directly in the skin of the dog giving it some electric shock upon activation. Though the voltage across is not definite, it ranges between 400 and 3000 Volts. This is dependent on the model.

In most communities, this is a very controversial topic. This is because some people believe that it causes injuries and even death to the dog. While this is not totally indisputable, it is also imperative that there are a few factors that you must consider to ensure that the dog is safe

Essentially, there are two basic types of shock collars. Stimulus-response shock collars and remote activation shock collar.
- Stimulus response shock collar
Under this classification, there are two types of shock collars, that is;
Anti-bark shock collar – this is mainly used to control the barking of the dog. It activates to giving an electric shock to a barking dog. As a result, barking is controlled.
Underground shock collars – in this case, a wire is buried where the dog should not cross. As the dog approaches, there is a warning beeping sound. However, if it does not respond to this and proceeds to the wire, it is shocking. Note: it is not possible for the dog to learn unless it is shocked at least once.
- Remote activation collars
As the word evince, this shock collars are controlled by a remote control. The user activates it when the dog misbehaves.
- Advantages of a shock collar
Continuous training– if you are training your dog, chances are that the dog will miss the training when you are away. The shock collar trains the dog in your absence.
Cheap– the cost of training a dog without a shock collar by far surpasses the price of a shock collar.
- Disadvantages of a shock collar
Quashes natural instincts – in events when the shock collar activates and shocks the dog when it is doing something right, the dog might end up correcting behavior that you did not mean to.
Fear – the training has no positive reinforcement such as rewards. This can even cause extreme fears.

Though the shock is considered minimal with slight magnitude, science has it that if it did not cause pain the dog would never change its behavior.
Regular exposure to electric shock causes fear and long-lasting stress.
