Potty Training Dogs Takes Time and Patience
Sometimes people tend to think that potty training dogs are easier. It takes time and calls for much patience. Life as a dog owner would be so much easier if you could teach your dog to use the toilet just like we humans do.
In some rare cases this is possible, but for the majority of dog owner’s potty training dogs is about training your dog to go outside to do their business. It takes time, patience, and depends a lot on the demeanor of your dog. It is clear that potty training dogs take time and patience.
Using the newspaper method is one of the easiest methods to use when housebreaking your dog. You will need to designate a room or part of a room in your house to do this in. Most people use a bathroom or utility room for this task. By laying newspaper on the floor of this room and getting your dog to go to the bathroom here you can get him to go on command.
When first starting take your dog to this room every hour or so and give him the potty command. He may or may not go but you are looking to be consistent. You will also need to watch him around the house and when he seems to need to do his business take him to the newspaper and give the command. Dogs are rather perceptive and he’ll pick up on what you are doing in short order. But first he will have to look at what exactly you are telling him.
The method of positive reinforcement is the key to successfully potty training your dog so be sure to give praise when he goes on the newspaper on command. Pleasing his owner is what your dog wants to do more than anything else. Don’t punish him when he makes a mistake and goes where he is not supposed to. If you don’t catch him in the act he won’t understand why he is being punished. When you do catch him in the act give a firm “no” and take him to the designated newspaper potty spot.
The dog will slowly learn to control his urges and starts going on command. Then you can slowly make the transfer to going outside. The same principles apply as using the newspapers and you can teach your dog to go only in a designated spot in your yard. This is also a good method to use for dogs that suffer from submissive or excited urination. This is a problem for some dogs that lose control of their bladder when you come home or they meet new people.
The way your dog will respond depends on you entirely. He can take time or learn immediately and make it easier for you. Some dogs will learn faster than others but potty training dogs is just a matter of some time and patience. Don’t make your dog rush because this might not please him at all.
When you take your time and have a lot of patience, then you will automatically achieve.
