Potty Training Mistakes and Reasons of Failure
Potty training is a commitment that you make. Create an attitude to see it as a full-time job. Much is done to achieve the potty training process though challenges rise up underway.
There are some common mistakes in this exercise that can even cause failure. It can be out of ignorance or intentional. Sometimes most dog owners never know when they do these mistakes. Let us look at potty training mistakes and reasons of failure
Below is a list of mistakes most done in potty training for your dog. These mistakes can be avoided. They can also lead to failure if not carefully handled.
1. Negative commands
This includes yelling at the dog in case of an accident. Most people also easily uses the ‘no’ phrase more often with the name of the dog. This will make your dog more hesitant anytime you call it. Attaching negativity with your commands will bring out negative results.
2. Avoiding a crate or a kennel
Sometimes you can feel guilty using crate or kennel. You may think its being mean with your dog ending up letting it everywhere in the house. It’s unavoidable for a puppy to have an accident. Letting it to have it everywhere in the house will make it think that it is ok and normal to have it everywhere. It can also be hectic monitoring all the places the dog has its accidents in the house.
3. Using all exit doors during the potty training
It is not recommendable to use all exit doors when taking the dog out for potty. This will make the dog think that all doors lead outside. Confusion may arise as a result and make it hard for the puppy to get successful potty training.
4. Failing to praise and pay up
Imagine you have come up with an invention that is going to multiply your company’s profits and you don’t get any appreciation or praises from your employer. That is what it means when your puppy potty in the right place and you assume thee act. Failing to pay up your puppy with something that tastes good on top of praises may stretch the training time or even face failure.
5. Giving up too soon
This can also be referred to expecting your dog to potty outside too soon. The dog may see few clean days. This is just a good progress. Stopping the training exercise at this time may disappoint you. Keep supervising it for months before you stop.
6. Misunderstanding holding time and potty signals
The younger the puppy, the shorter time it is going to hold. This calls up to watch for signals every time. Assuming that your puppy will hold for longer will leave you frustrated. You will always be missing the cues for potty.
7. Not treating the mess properly
During potty training, accidents usually occur. If one fails to clean the mess properly, the puppy may repeat messing up in the same spot. Ensure odor and the stains is completely cleared.
8. Punishing the dog in case of accidents
Most common punishments include forcing and holding the dog’s nose and rubbing it against the mess, spanking or scolding it as well as any physical intimidation towards the dog. All this will scare the dog away from you. It may not even eliminate when it’s close to you in an outside environment. It will be hard for you to achieve a consistent clean house in the long run.
Dog potty training should be handled well. Mistakes done frequently may see you failing to succeed in the potty training. Maintain positive in all encounters with your dog. If you realize any mistake, correct it as soon as possible.
