When we married we brought 3 children from 2 marriages together and tried to be a blended family. We believed 3 children was a good amount so we decided not to have any more. It was at that point we realized, we were not going to have children together so we would have dogs.
My husband had dogs his whole life. He was born into a home with an existing dog. Fortunately for him and the dog, his parents took the time to let the dog get to know the new baby and they all lived happily together for many years. A dog came into my life when I was about 10 years old and was a member of the family for about 12 years.
After my husband and I purchased our home he decided it was time we had a dog of our own so he visited the local SPCA and came home with a white mutt who quickly found a place in our hearts. One thing he and I never discussed was a method of dog training. I didn’t have much to do with training the dog that came to live with me as a child so I pretty much left this in his capable hands.
My husband set about putting down newspaper throughout the house, purchasing baby gates to help contain the puppy in certain uncarpeted areas of the house and taking her outside to house train her. We were fortunate as this dog caught on to her training quickly.
About two years later my husband was working in a pet store. A puppy rottweiler was brought in for sale and he spent time playing with her and getting to know her (the bonding started pretty quickly). The puppy was there for about 4 months and my husband was getting more and more attached to her. He brought me in there one day and I saw the way this dog sprung to life when he walked by. He opened the cage for me to get a better look at her and she jumped out of the cage into his arms. This is how we wound up with our second dog.
When we brought her home our children were delighted. Our first dog seemed more annoyed than anything but she did adapt to another four legged child in the house. Again, my husband started house training the dog right away, putting newspaper down in the house and taking her outside to get used to going “potty” outside after having been in a crate for a few month.
